In the nineteenth century, the Japanese woodcut inspired European artists to study new ways of using broad, precisely defined planes in their compositions; it was seen that a remarkable chromatic effect could be obtained by contrasting large blocks of colour. The essentials of modern poster art can be summed up as follows: reduction of detail to a minimum; renunciation of subsidiary motifs; use of precise outline; concentration on essentials, and suppression of the incidental; use of only a limited number of colours; integration of picture and letter-press; use of plain, easily legible typography; slogans which appeal to the imagination; and headlines which catch the eye. - Hellmut Rademacher, Masters of German Poster Art, October House, New York, 1966, page 11.
