(#67) LEVON:
|
It is good to honor a man while he is still alive. His face on a postage stamp, or a stretch of interstate highway named after him is all very well and good; but as far as the recipient of the honor is concerned, it lacks a certain appeal. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn enjoyed the rare pleasure of witnessing their own funeral, in which they luxuriated in encomium, wallowed in eulogy, and understood in general that they weren't such scamps after all. Then they interrupted the ceremony and were treated to a rendition of "Old Hundredth," that would still top the charts if it had been recorded. This is probably not going to happen to you or me. Don't wait until after they're dead to tell people what they mean to you. Never part with harsh words. They might be the last ones you ever get to say. |
