In 2010 the architect Barry Elbasani and his family completed financing for a house at Sea Ranch, the design was approved and they were about to break ground, when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. At Stanford hospital, in a moment of clarity, he said to his son Colin, “When you’re at Sea Ranch and a wind suddenly kicks up in the trees and the birds seem to be acting strangely for no apparent reason, you’ll know it’s me, and that I’m with you.”
